Health Promotion

Health Promotion initiatives comes in many different forms, but the main purpose is to encourage individuals to take preventive measures to avert the onset or worsening of an illness or disease and to adopt healthier lifestyles.

We will start by looking at our environment and then look at ourselves. In the environment, issues like pollution are a problem. If that water is consumed it can then also lead to the people getting sick.

Our community is affected by health issues as well - physically and socially. There are clinics that can help deal with physical illness and we can have community development groups to help improve our community to promote health and happiness. Your wellbeing is often affected by your emotional state as well and effects your experience of health and illness.

In terms of personal health issues, we will look at diseases like cholesterol, diabetes, TB, Cancer and HIV/Aids. It is important to consider the impact these diseases have on the person suffering and their family and community. We can also support people who are fighting to overcome illness. Finally, we can look at what kind of healthy lifestyles and preventative measures we can adopt to avoid getting sick.

Once we have all of the information we need, our best possible health is in our own hands....

Lets start working to see what the term will bring! Those following the project without actively taking part can look out for weekly blog entries from the students to see what we are doing.

2. Malaria The Facts

The invasion has begun. Microscopic magnification shows Plasmodium falciparum—the most virulent of the four malaria parasites that infect humans €”destroying red blood cells in the liver. It digests a cell's haemoglobin, multiplies inside to the point of rupturing the cell, and rapidly spreads a new generation of infection.

Her abdomen full of blood that will nourish her eggs, a female Anopheles mosquito takes to the air. Her next landing may be a dangerous one €”for the human who receives her bite. The female Anopheles mosquito is the only insect capable of carrying the human malaria parasite.

Blood been tested for Malaria

A mosquito lab

Washed garments hung to dry add splashes of colour to weather worn huts lining a river in Siem Reap, Cambodia. Poverty and weather conditions compound the problem of malaria. Outside of Africa, the majority of recorded cases of malaria are concentrated here and in eight other countries in Asia and South America.

Veiled in old bed nets, dormitory residents at the Kafue Boys Secondary School in Kafue, Zambia, get a small measure of protection each night. But the mosquito barriers are only as good as the fabric from which they're made. Holes in the nets, untreated material, or an exposed hand or foot during sleep increase the odds that the malaria-carrying insects will bite.

Contained panic shrouds the face of a mother whose child is suffering from malaria in Niger. Younger children are at higher risk of dying; their bodies have not developed enough immunity to fight the disease, which can infect their brains and kill them. Each day malaria claims the lives of about 3,000 children in Africa €”one every 30 seconds. Researchers predict that in 2007, malaria will strike up to a half billion people worldwide. About a million €”most under five years old and living in Africa €”will die.

Caught in a wrenching cycle of shivering cold, high fevers, and profuse sweats, ecologist Michael Fay struggles through yet another attack of malaria at the Bomassa camp in Congo. Taking regular doses of antimalarial drugs can have long-term side effects, such as hearing loss and liver and kidney damage. So Fay, who has worked in Africa for decades, tends to wait until he feels achy and queasy before medicating himself. It's a risky approach that has twice come close to killing him.

5. Peer Pressure

PEER PRESSURE:Come on! ALL of us are cutting math. Who wants to go take that quiz? We're going to take a walk and get lunch instead. Let's go!" says the coolest kid in your class. Do you do what you know is right and go to math class, quiz and all? Or do you give in and go with them?

As you grow older, you'll be faced with some challenging decisions. Some don't have a clear right or wrong answer — like should you play soccer or field hockey? Other decisions involve serious moral questions, like whether to cut class, try cigarettes,or lie to your parents.

Making decisions on your own is hard enough, but when other people get involved and try to pressure you one way or another it can be even harder. People who are your age, like your classmates, are called peers. When they try to influence how you act, to get you to do something, it's called peer pressure. It's something everyone has to deal with — even adults. Let's talk about how to handle it.

Defining Peer Pressure

Peers influence your life, even if you don't realize it, just by spending time with you. You learn from them, and they learn from you. It's only human nature to listen to and learn from other people in your age group.

Peers can have a positive influence on each other. Maybe another student in your science class taught you an easy way to remember the planets in the solar system, or someone on the soccer team taught you a cool trick with the ball. You might admire a friend who is always a good sport and try to be more like him or her. Maybe you got others excited about your new favourite book, and now everyone's reading it. These are examples of how peers positively influence each other every day.

Sometimes peers influence each other in negative ways. For example, a few kids in school might try to get you to cut class with them, your soccer friend might try to convince you to be mean to another player and never pass her the ball, or a kid in the neighbourhood might want you to shop lift with him.

Why Do People Give in to Peer Pressure?

Some kids give in to peer pressure because they want to be liked, to fit in, or because they worry that other kids might make fun of them if they don't go along with the group. Others go along because they are curious to try something new that others are doing. The idea that "everyone's doing it" can influence some kids to leave their better judgement, or their common sense, behind.

Walking Away From Peer Pressure

It is tough to be the only one who says "no" to peer pressure, but you can do it. Paying attention to your own feelings and beliefs about what is right and wrong can help you know the right thing to do. Inner strength and self-confidence can help you stand firm, walk away, and resist doing something when you know better.

It can really help to have at least one other peer, or friend, who is willing to say "no," too. This takes a lot of the power out of peer pressure and makes it much easier to resist. It's great to have friends with values similar to yours who will back you up when you don't want to do something.

You've probably had a parent or teacher advise you to "choose your friends wisely." Peer pressure is a big reason why they say this. If you choose friends who don't use drugs, cut class, smoke cigarettes, or lie to their parents, then you probably won't do these things either, even if other kids do. Try to help a friend who's having trouble resisting peer pressure. It can be powerful for one kid to join another by simply saying, "I'm with you — let's go."

Even if you're faced with peer pressure while you're alone, there are still things you can do. You can simply stay away from peers who pressure you to do stuff you know is wrong. You can tell them "no" and walk away. Better yet, find other friends and classmates to pal around with.

If you continue to face peer pressure and you're finding it difficult to handle, talk to someone you trust. Don't feel guilty if you've made a mistake or two. Talking to a parent, teacher, or school counsellor can help you feel much better and prepare you for the next time you face peer pressure.

Powerful, Positive Peer Pressure

Peer pressure is not always a bad thing. For example, positive peer pressure can be used to pressure bullies into acting better toward other kids. If enough kids get together, peers can pressure each other into doing what's right!

6. Domestic Violence

Domestic violence, also known as domestic abuse, spousal abuse, battering, family violence, and intimate partner violence (IPV), is defined as a pattern of abusive behaviours by one partner against another in an intimate relationship such as marriage, dating, family, or cohabitation. Domestic violence, so defined, has many forms, including physical aggression or assault (hitting, kicking, biting, shoving, restraining, slapping, throwing objects), or threats thereof; sexual abuse; emotional abuse controlling or domineering abuse. Alcohol consumption and mental ilness can be co-morbid with ,abuse and present additional challenges in eliminating domestic violence. Awareness, perception, definition and documentation of domestic violence differs widely from country to country, and from era to era.

8. Depression

DEPRESSION can be cured she said all we need to do is to rise awareness, depression involves your body, your moods and your thoughts. It affects the way you eat and sleep the way you think about things in the world. Depression is not the same as ordinary everyday blues or sadness that we feel sometimes,it is not a sign of weakness and it cannot be wished away. People with depression cannot just pull themselves together and get better.

Thandiswa told us then that there are two Illness Systems of DEPRESSION -Moodiness and Tiredness. Moodiness that means that they are overly excited or manic feelings and behavior which could also be called Bipolar Disorder. Sometimes the mood changes happen fast, but most often they happen slowly over a few days or weeks. Another sign of Depression is Tiredness meaning feeling tired the whole and just bot in the mood to do anything. Some people may even have Insomnia which means they font sleep for Days.

She then went on discussing and asking us what are the systems of depression?A few answers from the attendees were:Sadness-most of the time feeling over anxious.

Loss of sleep which leads to insomnia

Losing weight by not eating or weight gain by over eating.

Less energy then usual tired all the time

Thoughts of death or suicide:suicide attempts

And Physical symptoms that don’t respond to treatment such as

headaches, stomach pain, back pain and so more.

Guilt Feeling what have I done to deserve this?

10. 9 Ways to prepare for your final exam

You totally don’t want to think about it right now, but finals are just around the corner. That means you can add studying for them to your already vast to-do list. Here are some helpful hints on how to prepare for your exams and get everything else done.

Tip 1: Start early
Preparation for exams should begin earlier than the day before the test. You can’t cram an entire unit of information into an all-nighter. Get started at least a week before the exam.

Tip 2: Organize
Begin by making yourself a calendar outlining a daily schedule of topics for review. Cover a small amount of material for each class each day. Every time you complete a topic, give yourself a mini review.

Tip 3: Outline
Once you have decided what you need to study and how much time you need to spend studying, it is time to actually study. One of the best ways is to make succinct outlines. As you read over your textbook and class notes, write a brief summary for each topic. Highlight the areas in your outline that were most troublesome. When you have finished with all the material, you will have an outline you can review.

Tip 4: Make flashcards
Similar to outlining, making flashcards is a really helpful technique for studying. By writing down the information from your outline, you are already doing half the studying. Once the flashcards are complete, you will have a portable study packet to look over.

Tip 5: Get help
If you are having trouble memorizing something or a particular concept is just not sinking in, get help before it’s too late. Ask your teacher to go over a glitch you might be having. Or if memorizing 200 vocabulary words seems like too much to do, recruit your family members to quiz you with index cards.

Tip 6: Sleep
You need at least seven hours of sleep a night to function. Tests are designed to make you think. If you are sleep-deprived, you won’t be able to remember any of the information you worked so hard to cram into your brain.

Tip 7:Stay calm
Do not panic at the exam! Even if at first glance the test is overwhelming, remember to breathe. If a question seems too hard, answer all the questions you know, then return to the ones you left blank. Remind yourself that you are prepared.

Tip 8: Don’t rush
You have spent at least two weeks studying, so what’s another couple of minutes? Work through the exam slowly and read all the questions before answering them. If you are done before the time is up, look over your answers.

Tip 9: Relax post-exam
Don’t let panic overwhelm you. Even if you think you bombed the exam, worrying will not change your score. It may, however, affect your mindset for your next final. Zone out the last test and stay focused on the next one. Odds are, you didn’t do as badly as you think.

HEALTH PROMOTION IN SCHOOL

This is very important topic that I think that all school must deal with it. Here we as teachers must know that we deal with the child as a whole, like physically, emotionally and intellectually.

As teachers we faced with many challenges that affect our learners health. Many of them come from homes where there are no parents, they died of diseases ,therefore it is our duty
for us as teachers to be their parents and also educate them how to protect or live healthy lives.
On the emotional part it wise that each school have a social worker who will look after their problems so that it does not affect their work at school. Many of them are intellectully challenged and therefore as teachers we need to refer them so that they can get help.

AwareNet will also help learners to be aware of their environment by doing environment projects, about how to look and take care of their environment. Health project also will help them to understand diseases and health services that are available. To be able to do this we need people who experienced or who are working with these types of problems to come and visit schools and talk with the learners. Learners also should be involved and do their own projects or research and do presentation to the other learners.

depressive work situations

I know it is not good to complain rather one should deal with the matter. What can then one do when you see the situation and you try to bring suggestions for the matter to be sorted out but all your attempts are in vain or fall to deaf ears?

All that I am trying to say is that you wake up early in the morning , eager to work at school or you open school from short September school holidays you again so refreshed eager to work, when you come to school photocopy machines are not working in such a big school like Mary Waters I mean that is frustrating and lead to depression. At our school we've got some few copy machines but the ones that are suppose to be used by the teachers are always not working.

There are many depressive issues many of us are still faced with overcrowded classes where you end up have to mark about +- 200 scripts and you still have to do other school work I mean no leisure time that is why some of us end up abusing alcohol but I do not encourage that. Teaching profession for some of us is a slave work I will never encourage my child to opt for it. No incentive, nothing that encourages teachers, to make things worse we are faced with learners that can do whatever they feel like doing, few have respect for the adults.

It is not like in the olden days, these are few things that I have mentioned there are a lot. Its depressing..

SEX AND SEXUALITY:

Sex has two meanings:it can mean gender,if you are a male or female,or it can mean sexual intercourse.

Sexuality is when your body changes as you get older, for example, girls grow breasts and start their periods.

When people have sexual intercourse they have to be old enough and also use protection(condoms),or the best thing is to have it after marriage.I don't think teenagers should be having sex at all, because they are too young for sex even if they use protection, they should be taking care of there bodies.

SEX AND SEXUALITY

Sex may be our gender or making love.sexuality is the development of our bodies meaning when puberty occurs its sexuality.

A social worker from FAMSA came to talk to us about sex and sexuality.she told us that it is not right to have sex at a tender age and we should wait until we are ready, she told us that we should not be forced to have if we don’t want,if a person forces us to have sex with them against our will it is rape.

Andiswa told us that when we reach a certain age of 12-18 we youth experience physical changes in our bodies eg boys:penis gets bigger,we have voice box,get sexual active all the time and our bodies look alike like adults.Girls;breasts grow, menstrual cycles begin and bodies look as same as an adult.

The social worker told us that contraceptive increase high risks of pregnancy,if a teenager gets pregnant its not good for them to have abortion cause in the future the girl might not have any children because she killed the while she was young

She told us that teenage pregnancy occurs when kids are being pressured, she said that you have child at the age of 13-19 you are a child having a child,my mother was pregnant at the age of 17 but loves me like she didnt fall pregnant at a tender age.

SEX AND SEXUALITY

SEX AND SEXUALITY

Sex is not mainly about sexual intercourse which means having sex,it also involves your body parts...Monday last week we had a chit-chat session with a social worker from FAMSA.We mainly focused on our body parts and teenage life, our families, friendship, having boyfriends and girlfriends the advantages and the disadvantages of those things,we were told that having sex at a very young age can have so many disadvantages e.g falling pregnant, dropping out of school, being a drug addict because of stress, your future is going to be destroyed and you will have to raise a little baby on your own because some parents wont care. TEENAGE PREGNANCY was one of my topics for the short film project for upstart because i knew that so many teenagers are falling pregnant but not just in grahamstown all around the country or let me say in some other places in the country and it affects the country,it becomes over populated.

Peer pressure

Peer pressure is an influece from friends it is either bad or good. But most of the time is bad influence. We as teenagers we have different views in thinking and doing things also we are not raised the same by our parents. So peer pressure is always happening in high schools where we meet different people of our own ages and we do things the same now because you have this new friend. It is when we start dating having all those kind of stuff because your friends are doing so. drinking alcohol having sex and coming home late because you were pressurised by this old friend of yours. It is very bad because other parents are losing their children being killed on the tavern because of peer pressure.Good influence I use to call it advice from a friend, where we talk books going to the movies together and studying together. No fighting or any bad influence from anyone.

I was in a depression once by 2008 my aunt died and I couldn’t believe at that moment and the most thing that did affect me was that she died in front of me, and I couldn’t stop thinking about. But my parents tried to get me over it, it was so sad, and that anger because of I couldn’t do anything to help her, and I was always crying, always angry with people around me, it was so difficult for me to just get over it and move on, and the worse thing is that I was always dreaming about her too until I get born again, and I get so closer with church, and I kept on reading bible and then I saw some story which did comfort me, and I just remember that I am not alone I’m with god, that was it.

You are not ALONE! Beat Depression...

I think when it comes to depression, everyone at some point in their lives will experience it, due to a loss of a family member, friend and someone very dear to you will shake up your life into realizing how much that person means to you and that their gone, those moments are gone. Depression i believe is a state of mind where one believes that their problems are just too much too handle and don't really know how to deal with their issues. Some people may even be depressed by school, first it starts of as stress and later increasing, into becoming depression where one may feel suicidal, not really 'care' about anything or anyone. This however is not a disease and can be cured as one of the special treatments that work is actually talking to someone about your problems, exercising, eating healthy and keeping an positive attitude. I've once been depressed and as much as I am over it, it's something i wouldn't want to share as sometimes it's better off leaving the sleeping dogs lie. Get help! as depression doesn't only affect you but others also around you.

WHY DO TEENS TAKE DRUG?

Teens see alcohol and drugs at parties, in their communities, and on TV and movies. There are many reasons why teens take drugs:

  • Peer Pressure: we all want to fit in, be popular, and impress our friends-some teens think drugs are the way.
  • Stress and management: some teens feel stressed and unable to cope. Drugs make them feel calm and help them forget their problems for a while.
  • Boredom: teens who feel alone, or bored and have noyhing to do, may take drugs to give them some ,excitement, and somewhere to belong.
  • Low self-Esteem: teens who are shy, feel uncomfortable in social situations, feel bad about the way they look, or cant make friends easily, may use drugs to try again, confidence
  • Out of curiosity or to experiment.
  • Availability: there are drugs in South African schools and in society generally, and they are often affordable to students
  • Addiction: to avoid withdrawal symptoms once dependent.

DEPRESSION

I THINK THE WORD "DEPRESSION" MEAN TO HAVE LIKE BAD FEELINGS INSIDE YOUR HEART BUT YOU DON'T WANT TO SHARE YOUR FEELINGS WITH NO ONE, SO I THINK THATS DEPRESSION.

example: If like there is someone bothering you like at home, school or at church but you scared to tell people about this, i think that means you have depression.

Signs of depression: If like you don't want to go home, you afraid to go because maybe your dad or a family mamber is like raping you and you scared to tell people about this and at school your marks are decreasing or like you always weak or like not doing well at school and more, i think thats one of the signs of depression.

depression

Depression is an illness that involves your body mood and your thoughts it mostly happens to young people and how you get depression it can be at school, home and other places.Depression is when you stress to much and when you think a lot of things that you have been through them and you can’t sleep at night you are thinking about this thing eating you up.I had depression when my aunt my sick I could not eat or sleep I was thinking she was gonna die and god saved her she is alive I thank god so its rather speak when you have something wrong when my aunt was sick I wanted to kill my self i didn't see the point of living so I told my friends that I trust about this thing and they helped me so people find the one you trust and speak to them it can be anyone you trust I know its hard to speak but please lets try take care of your self’s.

Stress,peer pressure

Stress is when something is eating you up you think about it day and night you can't even sleep u worrying about this thing you can't stop thinking about it and it can lead u you to death or depression at a young age if you worry to much at this age and you will end up killing yourself for nothing what I think you need to do is that find someone you can trust and is also close to you and tell him/her your problem and talk about it or find a older person and talk to even your teacher at school.Stress is caused by money problems or Peer Pressure ,feeling lonely that no seems to talk to you and when your friends force you to do wrong staff and when you have done a bad thing it eats you up so my solution is to talk to a person you trust mostly. So teenagers let's stand up and fight all the wrong things for a better SA and enjoy your life because life is to short' peez peace out love you all.
